What is an IP address and IP Lookup?

When you connect to the internet, a unique address is given to your computer so that all the communication with the rest of the world (chat messaging, file sharing, web browsing) happens through this address. This can be compared to passport number or to social security number, in which all your location information and identity is stored. In internet world, this address is called IP address. Any computer connecting to internet or local network is allocated with unique IP address. You can find your IP address and IP locale information in this page under “What is my IP address” section. Also you can look-up any IP address or domain via our IP Lookup tool. You can also find out all information regarding the DNS records of the associated domain

How does IP address look like?

You can find 4 numbers in IP address- for instance 172.16.254.1 (for IPv4) and 2001:db8:0:1234:0:567:8:1 (for IPv6).Theoretically IP addresses can be as many beginning from 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255. However machines see and interpret the human readable IP addresses in different format: with 0s and 1s.

What are dynamic and static IP addresses?

Static IP addresses are registered to individuals by Internet Service Providers so that their computer is always assigned with the same IP address when connecting to the internet. Static IP addresses are needed if for example, when your computer is registered in the domain of corporate network and it should be passed through firewall. Or, if your computer always needs to be easily found by other computers – in online gaming and VOIP applications.

Dynamic IP addresses are given to individuals by Internet Service Providers as soon as they connect to the internet, without statically reserving them for individuals. Not all the internet users connect to internet at the same time, therefore, the same set of IP addresses can be relocated to different computers and the same number can be re-used several times. This hugely solves the problem of shortage of IP addresses.
